Braving the Wilderness

by Brené Brown

Brené’s most recent book, published in 2017 further guides us into brining our whole selves into the world.

“True belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are,” says Brené Brown.

She writes, “True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in being a part of something and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that’s rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it’s easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. But true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it’s a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It’s a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts.”

Learning from Braving the Wilderness

I love the concept of living a courageous life. I now apply this to my personal life, and also my working life. There is definitely a sense of freedom in knowing that you may fail … and that you may win! I find comfort in the knowledge that it is ok to be who you are, without sacrificing your values or your sense of self.

So inspired by Brené’s books, I enrolled for her on-line course called Brave Leaders Inc. The course teaches courageous leadership skills and behavior focusing on dealing with conflict, staying brave and constructive in tough conversations, resetting after failure or disappointment, building trust and putting personal and organisational values into practice.
